March 30, 2007 - Assets of the Hong Kong Exchange Fund totaled US$158.91 billion (HK$1,239.5 billion) on February 28, 2007, according to the Hong Kong Monetary Authority.

James Tien Appointed Chairman of Hong Kong Tourism Board

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government today announced the appointment of Mr. James Tien Pei-chun as Chairman of the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) for three years from April 1. Mr Tien will succeed Mrs. Selina Chow who will retire from the board after six years of dedicated service.
Land Auction Yields US$12.37 Million

A plot of government land was sold for US$12.37 million (HK$96.5 million) at a public land auction held by the Lands Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government today. This is the last public land auction for the 2006-07 financial year.

Hong Kong’s GDP Up 6.8% in 2006

Hong Kong’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased 7% in real terms in the fourth quarter of 2006 over a year earlier, compared with the 6.7% growth in the third quarter. For 2006 as a whole, GDP recorded a 6.8% growth in real terms over 2005, according to the preliminary figures of constant price GDP by economic activity for the fourth quarter of 2006 and the whole year of 2006 released by the Census and Statistics Department today.
Hong Kong Consumer Price Index Up 0.8% in February

Hong Kong’s overall consumer prices rose 0.8% in February, compared to a year earlier, smaller than the 2% increase recorded in January, according to the Composite Consumer Price Index (CPI) statistics released by the Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government (HKSARG) today.

Hong Kong’s Unemployment Rate Fell to 4.3%

Hong Kong’s Unemployment Rate Fell to 4.3% Hong Kong’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell from 4.4% in the November 2006 – January 2007 period to a provisional 4.3% in the December 2006 – February 2007 period. This is the lowest level recorded since mid-1998.
Government Releases Report on Public Consultation on Competition Policy

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government today released a report on the public consultation exercise on Hong Kong’s competition policy conducted between November 2006 and February this year, which indicates there was support from the majority of respondents for the introduction of a cross-sector competition law in Hong Kong.

Final Rule Issued by the U.S. Authorities Against Banco Delta Asia S.A.R.L in Macau

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) notes the announcement made by the U.S. Department of the Treasury on March 14, 2007 (U.S. time) that it is issuing a final rule under Section 311 of the USA PATRIOT Act against Banco Delta Asia S.A.R.L. (BDA) in Macau, which also applies to its subsidiaries including Delta Asia Credit Limited (DAC), a deposit-taking company authorized under the Banking Ordinance (BO).
