Hong Kong Exchange Fund Totals US$177.72 Billion
November 30, 2007
- Assets of the Hong Kong Exchange Fund totaled US$177.72 billion (HK$1,386.2 billion) on October 31, 2007. This is US$8.62 billion (HK$67.2 billion) higher than at the end of September 2007, according to the Hong Kong Monetary Authority.
Financial Results for the First Seven Months of 2007-2008 Financial Year

- The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government (HKSARG) had expenditures of US$17.09 billion (HK$133.3 billion) and revenue of US$19.42 billion (HK$151.5 billion) in the seven months ending October 31, 2007. There was a surplus of US$3.05 billion (HK$23.8 billion) in October, thereby bringing a net surplus of US$2.33 billion (HK$18.2 billion) up to end of October 2007.
International Study Shows Hong Kong Students Improving by Leaps and Bounds in Reading Literacy

The Education Bureau (EDB) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region today welcomed the finding of the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) 2006 that Hong Kong students ranked second among 45 participating jurisdictions, just one point less than their peers in Russia who came first in the study.

Hong Kong's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to a provisional 3.9% in August - October 2007, the lowest level since March - May 1998, from 4.1% in the preceding three-month period.
Hong Kong's Third Quarter GDP Up 6.2%

Hong Kong's economy stayed vibrant in the third quarter of 2007, with GDP leaping by 6.2% in real terms over a year earlier. This followed a robust 6.1% growth in the first half of the year and also marked the 16th consecutive quarter of distinctly above-trend growth.

The ceremony marked the launch of a series of activities to promote the Paralympic and Olympic Games.
Tenders Invited for Development of New Kai Tak Cruise Terminal

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government will issue an open tender on November 9 for the development of a new cruise terminal at Kai Tak. The successful tenderer is expected to design, build, operate, manage and maintain the new cruise terminal for 50 years and begin operating the first berth in February 2012.
