January 11, 2011 - Hong Kong Customs and the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission pledged today to strengthen co-operation in providing consumers with greater protection against unsafe products by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) concerning consumer product safety.

The Commissioner of Hong Kong Customs and Excise, Mr. Richard Yuen, and the Chairman of the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, Ms. Inez Moore Tenenbaum, signed the MOU at a ceremony in Hong Kong today.

Under the MOU, both administrations will enhance co-operation in the exchange of information on product safety and the training of officials, promoting product safety at multilateral level.

“The signing of the MOU concerning consumer product safety signifies Hong Kong and United States of America’s commitment and determination to reduce the risk of hazards posed by consumer products supplied in both places. It also marks a new phase of co-operation between both administrations in enhancing consumer protection through an effective framework,” said Mr. Yuen at the ceremony.

“This new agreement with Hong Kong is a positive step forward in our effort to ensure the safety of consumers in the United States and to become a more proactive agency that stops dangerous products before they reach the hands of consumers,” said Ms. Tenenbaum.
