Welcome Message

Mr. Eddie Mak

Hong Kong Commissioner for Economic and Trade Affairs, USA

  Mr. Eddie Mak

Dear friends, thank you for your interest in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong is a great world city: dynamic, exciting, cosmopolitan and full of opportunities.

A powerful combination of factors – prime location, enterprising population, rule of law, free market, efficient infrastructure, free flow of information, unrestricted capital flows – has made Hong Kong a leading international financial and business center.

I hope that this website heightens your understanding of Hong Kong, its unique relationship with the U.S. and the many opportunities our city offers Americans.

The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Washington, D.C, established in 1987, is the official representative of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government. Our mission is to broaden, deepen and enrich the already strong economic, trade, and cultural ties with the U.S.

The office maintains close working relations with the U.S. Congress and the Administration, including the Department of State, Department of Commerce, Department of Treasury, Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and Department of Justice.

Issues being dealt with include trade promotion, security enforcement matters, intellectual property rights, strategic trade control, investment protection, and financial services issues.

The office also has a public relations function to update our local network of friends on Hong Kong’s latest developments and promote Hong Kong culture, including its vibrant film industry. The office, in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institution’s Freer Gallery of Art, presents an annual “Made in Hong Kong” Film Festival each summer at the gallery to showcase our excellent movies.

We issue an electronic newsletter, “The Circle,” to keep our friends up-to-date on Hong Kong news.

Do not hesitate to contact any of us for information about Hong Kong – its business environment, its position on economic and trade issues, etc. For local media inquiries, please contact our Senior Information Officer, Mr. Daniel McAtee.

You may also contact colleagues in our New York and San Francisco offices.

Additional contact information for the three Hong Kong Economic and Trade Offices in the U.S. is available at www.hketousa.gov.hk.
