Hong Kong Exchange Fund at US$500.6 billion
July 31, 2017 - The Hong Kong Monetary Authority announced today that the total assets of the Exchange Fund amounted to HK$3,904.9 billion (US$500.6 billion) as at June 30, 2017. This is HK$97.5 billion (US$12.5 billion) higher than that at the end of May 2017. Foreign currency assets increased by HK$75.0 billion (US$9.6 billion) and Hong Kong dollar assets increased by HK$22.5 billion (US$2.8 billion).

July 24, 2017 - Two teams of secondary school students representing Hong Kong have both achieved outstanding results at the 48th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) and the 58th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, respectively.

Consumer Price Indices for June 2017
July 20, 2017 - The Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government released today the Consumer Price Index (CPI) figures for June 2017. According to the Composite CPI, overall consumer prices rose by 1.9% in June 2017 over the same month a year earlier, slightly smaller than the corresponding increase (2.0%) in May 2017.

Unemployment rate falls to 3.1%
July 18, 2017 - According to the latest labor force statistics (i.e. provisional figures for April - June 2017) released today by the Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 3.2% in March - May 2017 to 3.1% in April - June 2017. The underemployment rate remained unchanged at 1.2% in the two periods.

Hong Kong Monetary Authority hosts sharing session with AIIB President and senior executives from Hong Kong’s capital markets
July 18, 2017 - The President of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), Mr Jin Liqun, spoke to about 90 senior executives from capital markets at a sharing session hosted by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) today. This was the HKMA’s first time hosting a session with the AIIB following Hong Kong becoming a member of the AIIB on June 7. The session was hosted by the Chief Executive of the HKMA, Mr Norman Chan.

Hong Kong films in the spotlight in New York
July 13, 2017 - The 2017 New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) is presenting a diverse selection of 10 outstanding Hong Kong films, including a number of North American premieres. July 10, 2017 - The operational efficiency and air cargo services of Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) respectively have been recognized again by two prestigious international awards - the “Top Asian Airport Efficiency Excellence Award” from the Air Transport Research Society (ATRS), and the “Best Global Airport” from Asia Cargo News.

Hong Kong’s foreign currency reserves at US$408 billion
July 7, 2017 - The Hong Kong Monetary Authority announced today that the official foreign currency reserve assets of Hong Kong amounted to US$408 billion as at the end of June 2017, compared with US$402.7 billion at end-May 2017.

FSDC releases report on aircraft leasing and financing
July 7, 2017 - The Financial Services Development Council (FSDC) today released a report entitled “Recommendations for Developing Hong Kong as an Aircraft Leasing and Financing Hub”.

Hong Kong Customs makes record seizure of ivory tusks
July 6, 2017 - Hong Kong Customs seized about 7,200 kilograms of ivory tusks with an estimated market value of about HK$72 million (US$9.2 million) on July 4 in a container from Malaysia at the Kwai Chung Customhouse Cargo Examination Compound. This is a record high in quantity for a seizure of ivory tusks over the past 30 years.

Hong Kong Government Welcomes Further Increase of Investment Quota for RQFII Scheme
July 5, 2017 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government welcomed the announcement by the People’s Bank of China on July 4 that the State Council has approved a further increase of the investment quota for Hong Kong’s Renminbi Qualified Foreign Institutional Investor (RQFII) scheme to Renminbi (RMB) 500 billion.

BCCL and HKMA Promote Bond Connect
July 3, 2017 - Bond Connect Company Limited (BCCL), a joint venture of China Foreign Exchange Trade System (CFETS) and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) formed to support Bond Connect, a new mutual market access program for bonds between Hong Kong and Mainland China, co-hosted an investor forum on the program today with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA).
