Financial results for the eight months ended November 30, 2019
December 31, 2019 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced today its financial results for the eight months ended November 30, 2019.

Hong Kong Exchange Fund at US$531.1 billion
December 31, 2019 - The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) announced today that the total assets of the Exchange Fund amounted to HK$4,142.8 billion (US$531.1 billion) as at November 30, 2019. This is HK$45.2 billion (US$5.7 billion) lower than that at the end of October 2019. Foreign currency assets decreased by HK$40.9 billion and Hong Kong dollar assets decreased by HK$4.3 billion (US$551 million).

External merchandise trade statistics for November 2019
December 30, 2019 - The Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government released today the external merchandise trade statistics for November 2019. In November 2019, the values of Hong Kong's total exports and imports of goods both recorded year-on-year decreases, at 1.4% and 5.8% respectively.

IMF acknowledges Hong Kong's robust policy frameworks and ample buffers for addressing economic challenges and safeguarding financial stability
December 30, 2019 - The International Monetary Fund (IMF) released a Staff Report today which, substantiated by a more detailed analysis, reinforces its assessment of Hong Kong's economic and financial positions published on December 4, 2019, following the conclusion of the annual Article IV consultation.

Implementation of new round of SME measures in January 2020
December 29, 2019 - To further strengthen its support of Hong Kong’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs), the Government will implement a number of measures starting from next January, including the launch of the new “SME ReachOut” service, and enhancements to the Dedicated Fund on Branding, Upgrading and Domestic Sales (BUD Fund) and the SME Export Marketing Fund (EMF).

Hong Kong firmly upholds freedoms and human rights
December 26, 2019 - A Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government spokesman stressed today that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government attached "the utmost importance to and firmly upheld human rights and various freedoms" in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Customs reminds public not to bring cannabis products from overseas into Hong Kong
December 23, 2019 - Hong Kong Customs today reminded members of the public that they should pay attention to whether the products they purchase when travelling overseas during the Christmas and New Year holidays contain cannabis or controlled cannabinoids (such as tetrahydro-cannabinol, or THC) since illicit import of such products is a criminal offence. They are urged not to break the law.

HKSAR Young People to Work at the United Nations
December 23, 2019 - The Launch Ceremony of the First Batch of HKSAR Junior Professional Officers Recommended by the Central Government of the PRC to the United Nations was held today at the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (OCMFA) to mark the occasion of five Hong Kong young people taking up positions in different agencies of the United Nations (UN).

Consumer Price Indices for November 2019
December 20, 2019 - The Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government released today the Consumer Price Index (CPI) figures for November 2019. According to the Composite CPI, overall consumer prices rose by 3.0% in November 2019 over the same month a year earlier, slightly smaller than the corresponding increase (3.1%) in October 2019.

Hong Kong Customs combats counterfeit goods activities bound for United States
December 19, 2019 - Hong Kong Customs conducted a targeted operation between November 18 and December 15 to combat cross-boundary counterfeit goods destined for the United States. About 13,000 items of suspected counterfeit goods with an estimated market value of about HK$1.5 million (US$192,000) were seized.

Free Trade Agreement and Investment Agreement between Hong Kong and Australia enter into force
December 18, 2019 - The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and Investment Agreement signed between Hong Kong and Australia in March this year will enter into force officially on January 17, 2020, providing Hong Kong traders and investors with legal certainty and more favorable access to the Australian market, while creating more business opportunities and enhancing trade and investment flows between Hong Kong and Australia.

Unemployment rate increased to 3.2%
December 17, 2019 - According to the latest labor force statistics (i.e. provisional figures for September - November 2019) released today by the Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased from 3.1% in August - October 2019 to 3.2% in September - November 2019. The underemployment rate remained unchanged at 1.2% in the two periods.

SFETO supports premiere of “Mila” in San Francisco
December 13, 2019 - “Mila”, a chamber opera presented by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and the Asia Society Hong Kong Center, was performed in San Francisco, the United States on December 12 (San Francisco time). Called “quirky, quintessentially Hong Kong, and bold” by Time magazine, “Mila” explores the cultural richness and diversity of Hong Kong and was produced by an international cast and creative team from the US, Hong Kong and the Philippines.

Hong Kong's Gross National Income and external primary income flows for third quarter of 2019
December 13, 2019 - The Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government released today the preliminary statistics on Hong Kong's Gross National Income (GNI) and related figures for the third quarter of 2019.

Hong Kong joins global Partnership for Healthy Cities
December 13, 2019 - The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administration Region (HKSAR) today announced that Hong Kong has joined the Partnership for Healthy Cities, a global network of 70 cities committed to saving lives by preventing non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as cancer or diabetes, and injuries.

Hong Kong team excels at the International Junior Science Olympiad
December 12, 2019 - A team of six secondary school students representing Hong Kong achieved outstanding results in the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) 2019, being awarded two gold and four silver medals.

External direct investment of Hong Kong in 2018
December 12, 2019 - Hong Kong’s external direct investment (DI) statistics for 2018 were released today by the Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government.

December 4, 2019 - With the social and economic environment of Hong Kong facing unprecedented challenges, Hong Kong’s Financial Secretary, Mr Paul Chan, announced today a new package of measures to support enterprises and employment.

IMF commends resilience of Hong Kong’s financial system and welcomes Government's policies to support economy and safeguard financial stability
December 4, 2019 - An International Monetary Fund (IMF) Staff Mission has commended the resilience of Hong Kong's financial system and Linked Exchange Rate System (LERS) despite a slowing economy, noting that a history of prudent macroeconomic policies has left Hong Kong with significant buffers to navigate through cyclical and structural challenges. The Mission also expressed support for the Government's various policies to support the economy and safeguard financial stability. 

International study shows Hong Kong students’ good performance in reading, mathematical and scientific literacy
December 3, 2019 - The Education Bureau (EDB) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government today said that Hong Kong students as a whole performed well in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018, maintaining their achievements in the previous assessment.
