HKSAR Government welcomes decision to launch cross-boundary wealth management connect pilot scheme
June 29, 2020 - The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) welcomes the joint announcement by the People’s Bank of China (PBoC), the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) and the Monetary Authority of Macao (AMCM) today on the decision to implement the two-way cross-boundary wealth management connect pilot scheme (Wealth Management Connect) in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, under which residents in Hong Kong, Macao and nine cities in Guangdong Province could carry out cross-boundary investment in wealth management products distributed by banks in the area.

External merchandise trade statistics for May 2020
June 29, 2020 - The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) released today the external merchandise trade statistics for May 2020. In May 2020, the values of Hong Kong's total exports and imports of goods both recorded year-on-year decreases, at 7.4% and 12.3% respectively

Government launches Pilot Scheme on Facilitation for Persons Participating in Arbitral Proceedings in Hong Kong
June 29, 2020 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government launched today the Pilot Scheme on Facilitation for Persons Participating in Arbitral Proceedings in Hong Kong (the Scheme). It aims to provide facilitation for eligible non-Hong Kong residents participating in arbitral proceedings in Hong Kong on a short-term basis in order to strengthen Hong Kong’s position as an international center for legal and dispute resolution services in the Asia-Pacific region, and be in line with the Belt and Road Initiative as well as the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Development.

HKSARG welcomes Thailand’s announcement to establish special travel arrangement for cross-border control with Hong Kong
June 29, 2020 - The Commerce and Economic Development Bureau (CEDB) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government and the Thailand Board of Investment jointly organized a webinar titled “Resilience Strategy: Thailand-Hong Kong Partnership” today. The Deputy Secretary General to the Prime Minister for Political Affairs of Thailand, Dr Kobsak Pootrakool, said in the webinar that the Government of Thailand announced this afternoon the decision to set up a special travel arrangement for cross-border control with five economies including Hong Kong as a first step in relaxing its inbound passenger control.

Government strongly objects to United States Trafficking in Persons Report 2020
June 26, 2020 - A Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government spokesman said today that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government strongly objects to the United States Trafficking in Persons Report 2020 (the Report) released by the United States Department of State. 

HKSARG strongly opposes to passage of the Hong Kong Autonomy Act by US Senate
June 26, 2020 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government today expressed strong opposition to the passage of the “Hong Kong Autonomy Act” (“The Act”) by the Senate of the United States (US) Congress. 

Government to begin distributing 30 million locally-produced masks to the public free-of-charge
June 25, 2020 - The Commerce and Economic Development Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced today that the Government will begin to deliver masks free-of-charge to all residential addresses in Hong Kong through Hongkong Post starting next Tuesday (June 30). Each household will receive a pack of ten disposable adult masks. The masks that will be distributed are the first batch procured by the Government under the Local Mask Production Subsidy Scheme. The Government wishes to share these masks with the public and fight the virus together.

Chief Executive appoints Chief Justice of the Court of Final Appeal
June 24, 2020 - Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, today signed the instrument of appointment of the Honourable Mr Justice Andrew Cheung Kui-nung as the Chief Justice of the Court of Final Appeal with effect from January 11, 2021, and reported the appointment to the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPCSC) for the record, completing the relevant legal procedures for the appointment of the Chief Justice of the Court of Final Appeal.

Consumer Price Indices for May 2020
June 22, 2020 - The Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government released today (June 22) the Consumer Price Index (CPI) figures for May 2020. According to the Composite CPI, overall consumer prices rose by 1.5% in May 2020 over the same month a year earlier, smaller than the corresponding increase (1.9%) in April 2020. Netting out the effects of all Government's one-off relief measures, the year-on-year rate of increase in the Composite CPI (i.e. the underlying inflation rate) in May 2020 was 1.9%, smaller than that in April 2020 (2.3%). The smaller increase in May was mainly due to the smaller increases in the prices of pork and fresh vegetables, as well as private housing rentals.

CEDB responds to recommendation by US Department of Justice
June 18, 2020 - In response to media enquiries about the recommendation made by a committee under the Department of Justice of the United States (the Committee) in denying the submarine cable connection by the Pacific Light Cable Network (PLCN) to Hong Kong, a spokesman for the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau (CEDB) said the following today (June 18)

Volume and price statistics of external merchandise trade in April 2020
June 18, 2020 - Further to the external merchandise trade statistics in value terms for April 2020 released earlier on, the Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government released today the volume and price statistics of external merchandise trade for that month.

Hong Kong residents stranded in India to take special flights to return home
June 17, 2020 - A Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government spokesman said today that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government has arranged two special flights to bring back Hong Kong residents stranded in India. The two flights are tentatively scheduled to depart from Bengaluru and Chennai for Hong Kong on June 18 and 20 respectively at the earliest.

Hong Kong ranked fifth in World Competitiveness Yearbook 2020
June 16, 2020 - Hong Kong was ranked fifth globally in the latest World Competitiveness Yearbook (WCY) 2020 published by the International Institute for Management Development (IMD), down from second last year. IMD attributed Hong Kong’s lower ranking to a decline in economic performance, social turmoil as well as the rub-on effect of the Chinese economy.

Unemployment rate rises to 5.9%
June 16, 2020 - According to the latest labor force statistics (i.e. provisional figures for March - May 2020) released today by the Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased from 5.2% in February - April 2020 to 5.9% in March - May 2020. The underemployment rate also increased from 3.1% in February - April 2020 to 3.5% in March - May 2020.

Government relaxes social distancing measures under Prevention and Control of Disease Ordinance
June 16, 2020 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government will gazette today (June 16) directions and amendments under the Prevention and Control of Disease (Requirements and Directions) (Business and Premises) Regulation (Cap. 599F) and the Prevention and Control of Disease (Prohibition on Group Gathering) Regulation (Cap. 599G) to extend the social distancing measures in relation to catering businesses, scheduled premises and group gatherings in public places, as well as make appropriate adjustments and relaxations having regard to the latest situation.  The measures will come into effect on June 19, 2020 for a period of 14 days till July 2, 2020.

Chief Executive signs National Anthem Ordinance
June 11, 2020 - Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, today signed the National Anthem Ordinance passed by the Legislative Council (LegCo) in accordance with Article 48(3) of the Basic Law. The National Anthem Ordinance will come into immediate effect after it is published in the Gazette tomorrow (June 12).

Financial Secretary congratulates Mr Ashley Alder on his re-appointment as Chair of Board of International Organization of Securities Commissions
June 10, 2020 - Hong Kong’s Financial Secretary, Mr Paul Chan, today welcomed the re-appointment of Mr Ashley Alder, the Chief Executive Officer of the Securities and Futures Commission, as Chair of the Board of the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) for a third term.

Government upholds Hong Kong’s international aviation hub status through Land Fund investment
June 9, 2020 - Hong Kong’s Financial Secretary, Mr Paul Chan, announced today an investment in Cathay Pacific Airways Limited (“Cathay Group”) through the Land Fund. This would uphold Hong Kong’s status as an international aviation hub, and at the same time generate a return for the Government.

Government announces details of Cash Payout Scheme
June 8, 2020 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced today that the Cash Payout Scheme will open for registration on June 21, 2020. Hong Kong permanent residents aged 18 or above on or before March 31, 2021, may register electronically or use a paper form to receive HK$10,000 (US$1,282). Registration will close on December 31, 2021.

Foreign Currency Reserves at US$442.3 billion
June 5, 2020 - The Hong Kong Monetary Authority announced today that the official foreign currency reserve assets of Hong Kong amounted to US$442.3 billion as at the end of May 2020 (end-April 2020: US$441.3 billion).

June 4, 2020 - Invest Hong Kong (InvestHK) today announced details of its five-day StartmeupHK Festival 2020, which will run from July 6 to 10. Banking Talent Program launched
June 4, 2020 - The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) and the banking industry jointly launched the Banking Talent Program today to nurture young talents for the industry, and provide participants with an opportunity to better prepare for future careers in the banking sector. Free Trade Agreement and Investment Agreement between Hong Kong and ASEAN enter into force for Indonesia
June 3, 2020 - A Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government spokesman said today that the part relating to Indonesia under the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and the Investment Agreement (IA) between Hong Kong and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will enter into force on July 4.

June 2, 2020 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government today announced the latest disease prevention measures and arrangements under the Prevention and Control of Disease Ordinance (Cap. 599).

Second batch of Hong Kong residents stranded in India to take special flight to return home
June 2, 2020 - A Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government spokesman said today that the second batch of Hong Kong residents stranded in India will take a special flight arranged by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government to return home. The flight is tentatively scheduled to depart from Mumbai for Hong Kong on June 3 in the early morning at the earliest.

Provisional statistics of retail sales for April 2020
June 1, 2020 - The Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government released the latest figures on retail sales today.
