Hospital Authority welcomes proposed changes to Medical Registration (Amendment) Bill 2021
August 31, 2021 - The Hospital Authority (HA) welcomed the approval of the changes to the Medical Registration (Amendment) Bill 2021 by the Executive Council today so as to cast the net of the special registration regime wider to attract more qualified non-locally trained doctors to serve in Hong Kong.

Exchange Fund at US$583.7 billion
August 31, 2021 - The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) announced today (August 31) that the total assets of the Exchange Fund amounted to HK$4,553.1 billion (US$583.7 billion) as at July 31, 2021. This is HK$13.5 billion (US$1.7 billion) lower than that at the end of June 2021. Hong Kong dollar assets decreased by HK$17.4 billion (US$2.2 billion) while foreign currency assets increased by HK$3.9 billion (US$500 million).

Government maintains most of the social distancing measures under Prevention and Control of Disease Ordinance
August 31, 2021 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government will gazette directions and specifications under the Prevention and Control of Disease (Requirements and Directions) (Business and Premises) Regulation (Cap. 599F), the Prevention and Control of Disease (Prohibition on Group Gathering) Regulation (Cap. 599G) and the Prevention and Control of Disease (Wearing of Mask) Regulation (Cap. 599I) to maintain most of the social distancing measures currently in place. The above directions and specifications will take effect at 0.00am on September 2 for a period of 14 days till September 15 (the specified period).

Government updates list of places of recognized vaccination records
August 30, 2021 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced today the acceptance of vaccination records issued by places including Indonesia, the Philippines and Turkey as recognized vaccination records for the purpose of Hong Kong residents who have stayed in Group A specified places under the mechanism. The relevant arrangements will take effect at 0.00am on September 1.

5th Plenary Session of Hong Kong/Shanghai Co-operation Conference
August 30, 2021 - The Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), Mrs Carrie Lam, and the Mayor of Shanghai, Mr Gong Zheng, leading the delegations of the HKSAR and Shanghai respectively, co-chaired the 5th Plenary Session of the Hong Kong/Shanghai Co-operation Conference through video conferencing today.

Chief Executive congratulates Wong Ting-ting on winning first Tokyo Paralympic medal for Hong Kong
August 28, 2021 - Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, today extended her congratulations to Hong Kong table tennis player Wong Ting-ting on winning a bronze medal in the Women’s Singles TT11 event at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games for Hong Kong. This is the first medal won by the Hong Kong, China Delegation in this Paralympic Games.

Hong Kong residents born in 1977, 1978 or 1979 should apply for new smart identity cards between September 20 and
November 18, 2021

August 27, 2021 - The Immigration Department (ImmD) announced today that Hong Kong residents born in 1977, 1978 or 1979 and holding the old form of smart identity card should bring along their old form of smart identity card and apply for new smart identity cards in person at a Smart Identity Card Replacement Centre (SIDCC) (see Annex I) from September 20 (Monday) to November 18, 2021 (Thursday). The SIDCCs are open from 8am to 10pm from Monday to Saturday (except public holidays).

Government welcomes passage of Waste Disposal (Charging for Municipal Solid Waste) (Amendment) Bill 2018
August 26, 2021 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has welcomed the passage of the Waste Disposal (Charging for Municipal Solid Waste) (Amendment) Bill 2018 (the Amendment Bill) by the Legislative Council (LegCo) today (August 26), and expressed gratitude to LegCo Members and the Bills Committee for their time and efforts devoted, which facilitated the passage of the Amendment Bill.

External merchandise trade statistics for July 2021
August 26, 2021 - The Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government released today the external merchandise trade statistics for July 2021. In July 2021, the values of Hong Kong’s total exports and imports of goods both recorded year-on-year increases, at 26.9% and 26.1% respectively.

Chief Executive visits research centers under InnoHK research cluster
August 26, 2021 - Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, today visited two research centers at the Hong Kong Science Park that were established by the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in collaboration with world-renowned universities and research institutes under the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government’s InnoHK research clusters. She also learnt more about the latest developments of art tech at the Science Park and witnessed the signing of memoranda of understanding between the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) and local universities as well as an international enterprise.

Secretary for Food and Health attends 11th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation High-Level Meeting on Health and the Economy
August 24, 2021 - Hong Kong’s Secretary for Food and Health, Professor Sophia Chan, attended the 11th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) High-Level Meeting on Health and the Economy today via video conferencing to discuss and exchange views with leaders of other economies on the nexus of health and the economy in the context of COVID-19.

Government proposes amendments to Film Censorship Ordinance to enhance regulatory framework
August 24, 2021 - Hong Kong’s Chief Executive in Council has approved today the introduction of the Film Censorship (Amendment) Bill 2021 into the Legislative Council (LegCo) to enhance the film censorship regulatory framework, with a view to ensuring more effective fulfilment of the duty to safeguard national security as required by the Law of the People’s Republic of China on Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, as well as preventing and suppressing acts or activities that may endanger national security.

HKSAR Government holds talk on National 14th Five-Year Plan
August 23, 2021 - The talk on the National 14th Five-Year Plan was held this morning (August 23) at the Central Government Offices. The theme of the talk was “Actively Seizing the Opportunities of the National 14th Five-Year Plan, Hong Kong to Proactively Integrate into the Country's Overall Development”. It was attended by more than 200 guests, including a delegation led by Deputy Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council (HKMAO) Mr Huang Liuquan, as well as the Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government (LOCPG) in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), Mr Luo Huining, and representatives of the LOCPG; the governing team of the HKSAR Government, Permanent Secretaries and Heads of Departments; members of the Executive Council; the Chairman of the University Grants Committee, Mr Carlson Tong; the Chairman of the Research Grants Council, Professor Wong Yuk-shan; and Presidents of universities.

Hong Kong SAR Government welcomes SFC’s approval for HKEX to launch A-share index futures contract in Hong Kong
August 20, 2021 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government welcomes the announcement made by the Securities and Futures Commission today about the approval for Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) to launch the MSCI China A-share index futures contract in Hong Kong, and expresses gratitude to the Central Government for its support during the process.

Hong Kong and Singapore decide not to further pursue bilateral Air Travel Bubble
August 19, 2021 - The Governments of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and Singapore announced today that taking into account the differences in the anti-epidemic strategies currently adopted by the two places, the two governments have decided not to pursue further discussions on the bilateral Air Travel Bubble (ATB) and will continue to facilitate movements of travelers between the two places under their respective border control measures.

Secretary for Food and Health attends sixth Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Ministerial Meeting on Food Security
August 19, 2021 - Hong Kong’s Secretary for Food and Health, Professor Sophia Chan, attended the sixth Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Ministerial Meeting on Food Security today via video conferencing to discuss and exchange views thoroughly with leaders of other economies on how to safeguard food security and speed up the post-pandemic economic recovery through innovation and digitalization initiatives and deepening inter-economy co-operation.

Consumer Price Indices for July 2021
August 19, 2021 - The Census and Statistics Department of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region released today the Consumer Price Index (CPI) figures for July 2021. According to the Composite CPI, overall consumer prices rose by 3.7% in July 2021 over the same month a year earlier, larger than the corresponding increase (0.7%) in June 2021. The larger increase in July 2021 was mainly due to the low base of comparison arising from the Government’s payment of public housing rentals and waiver of two-thirds of rent for tenants of Group B estates by Hong Kong Housing Society in July 2020. Netting out the effects of all Government's one-off relief measures, the year-on-year rate of increase in the Composite CPI (i.e. the underlying inflation rate) in July 2021 was 1.0%, also larger than that in June 2021 (0.4%). The larger increase was mainly due to the enlarged increases in the costs for meals out and takeaway food as well as the increases in local transport fares.

Unemployment rate fell to 5%
August 18, 2021 - According to the latest labor force statistics (i.e. provisional figures for May - July 2021) released today by the Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 5.5% in April - June 2021 to 5.0% in May - July 2021. The underemployment rate also decreased from 2.5% in April - June 2021 to 2.4% in May - July 2021.

Government tightens quarantine requirements for persons arriving from 16 overseas places
August 16, 2021 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced today that the quarantine requirements for persons arriving from 16 overseas places will be tightened in view of the latest developments of the COVID-19 epidemic situation. The arrangement will take effect from 0.00am on August 20.

Chief Executive inspects Kai Tak Development Area
August 13, 2021 - Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, today inspected the Kai Tak Development Area to learn more about the works progress of the Kai Tak Sports Park project. She also visited the Kai Tak Sky Garden, and the Kai Tak River where improvement works have been completed.

August 13, 2021 - The “Success through Synergy” seminar on opportunities for Hong Kong’s legal industry in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), organized by the Department of Justice (DoJ) and the Law Society of Hong Kong, was held today (August 13). Participants conducted an in-depth discussion on the important role played by the Hong Kong legal sector in the development of the GBA, urging the legal sector to seize the opportunities and proactively integrate into the overall development of the country.

August 13, 2021 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government released today the Half-yearly Economic Report 2021, together with the revised figures on Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the second quarter of 2021.

Mid-year population for 2021
August 12, 2021 - According to the statistics released by the Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government today, the provisional estimate of the Hong Kong population was 7,394,700 at mid-2021, representing a decrease of 87,100 or 1.2% from 7,481,800 at mid-2020.

Chief Executive announces measures to further promote sports development
August 10, 2021 - Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, together with the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Caspar Tsui, today announced various measures conducive to the sustainable development of sports in Hong Kong. She also called on the academic sector, enterprises and members of the public to further support Hong Kong athletes to scale new heights, as well as to promote the professionalization of sports and the development of the sports industry in Hong Kong.

August 8, 2021 - Hong Kong cycling athlete Lee Wai-sze today won a bronze medal in the Women’s Sprint event (Track Cycling) of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games for Hong Kong. This is the second Olympic medal won by Lee Wai-sze, who first captured a bronze medal in the Women's Keirin event at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Today’s medal is the sixth by the Hong Kong, China Delegation at this Olympic Games. The Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, extended her greatest congratulations to her.

August 8, 2021 - The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Caspar Tsui, today congratulated Hong Kong cycling athlete Lee Wai-sze on winning the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games bronze medal in the Women's Sprint event (Track Cycling) for Hong Kong.

Latest quarantine and testing arrangements for overseas arrivals and forthcoming implementation of self-paid serology antibody testing service at airport
August 7, 2021 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government reminded the public today that announcement was made earlier to re-categorize overseas places into high-risk, medium-risk and low-risk groups, and implement boarding, quarantine and testing requirements based on the risk levels under the “vaccine bubble” concept and risk-based principle.  The relevant arrangements will take effect on August 9. The Government further elaborated on the arrangements applicable to children aged under 12, and strengthen the compulsory testing requirements applicable to persons arriving from low-risk places. The Government also announced that the self-paid serology antibody testing service for eligible arrivals will be rolled out from August 18.

New York Asian Film Festival showcases vibrancy of Hong Kong cinema
August 6, 2021 - The vibrant and versatile Hong Kong cinema will continue to shine on the world stage at the upcoming New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) running from today (August 6) to August 22 (New York Time). This year, the Hong Kong Panorama film series will feature 15 Hong Kong films with screenings taking place online, in-theatre and outdoors.

August 6, 2021 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government today expressed strong opposition to the latest actions by the United States Government against the HKSAR under the so-called “Memorandum on the Deferred Enforced Departure for Certain Hong Kong Residents” (the Memorandum).

Foreign currency reserves at US$494.8 billion
August 6, 2021 - The Hong Kong Monetary Authority announced today that the official foreign currency reserve assets of Hong Kong amounted to US$494.8 billion as at the end of July 2021, compared with US$491.6 billion at end-June 2021.

Government provides special further support to tourism-related sectors
August 5, 2021 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced today (August 5) that a provision of about HK$377 million (US$48.3 million) will be earmarked under the Anti-epidemic Fund (AEF) for providing special further support to the tourism and related sectors, as well as the cross-boundary passenger transport trade, which are still seriously affected by the negative impact of the COVID-19 epidemic.

Chief Executive congratulates Hong Kong table tennis athletes on winning bronze medal in team event at Tokyo Olympics
August 5, 2021 - Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, today wholeheartedly congratulated Hong Kong table tennis athletes Lee Ho-ching, Doo Hoi-kem, Soo Wai-yam and Zhu Chengzhu on winning a bronze medal in the Table Tennis Women's Team competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. August 5, 2021 - Hong Kong karate athlete Grace Lau today won a bronze medal in the Women’s Kata event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Government tightens border control measures to build anti-epidemic barrier
August 3, 2021 - In view of the latest development in global and local COVID-19 epidemic situations, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government will tighten the border control measures for overseas inbound travelers based on “vaccine bubble” in order to build an anti-epidemic barrier to prevent the importation of cases. The new measures will take effect from August 9.

Provisional statistics of retail sales for June 2021
August 2, 2021 - The Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government released the latest figures on retail sales today.

STEM Internship Scheme attracts over 1,700 university students so far this summer
August 2, 2021 - A spokesman for the Innovation and Technology Commission said that the new round of the STEM Internship Scheme launched this summer has attracted over 1,700 university students in the past two months, exceeding the total number of participants last year. Meanwhile, around 1,000 companies or organizations have joined this round so far, which is close to the total number last year. These figures show that the Scheme is well recognized and supported by the universities and the business community.

Consumption Voucher Scheme has disbursed first voucher to about 5.5 million registrants on 1 August
August 1, 2021 - A Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government spokesman said that the Government today had disbursed via the four stored value facility (SVF) operators the first HK$2,000 (US$256) consumption voucher to about 5.5 million eligible people who had completed electronic registration by July 17. These people will also successively receive SMS notifications or mobile app push notifications on the disbursement today.
