Hong Kong ranked seventh in World Competitiveness Yearbook 2021
June 17, 2021 - Hong Kong was ranked seventh globally in the latest World Competitiveness Yearbook (WCY) 2021 published by the International Institute for Management Development (IMD), compared to fifth last year. Switzerland was ranked top, followed by Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Singapore and Norway.

InvestHK launches Global Fast Track 2021 to accelerate fintech scaling opportunities in Hong Kong and beyond
June 17, 2021 - Invest Hong Kong (InvestHK) announced today that the Global Fast Track 2021 program is now open for applications from fintech scale-ups and established firms intending to scale from Hong Kong, Asia’s leading fintech hub, to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), Asia and beyond. This is a special program led by InvestHK to promote fintech business adoption in Hong Kong. Selected companies will earn a spot to be showcased prominently at Hong Kong FinTech Week 2021 during November 1 to 5.

Volume and Price Statistics of External Merchandise Trade in April 2021
June 17, 2021 - Further to the external merchandise trade statistics in value terms for April 2021 released earlier on, the Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, released today the volume and price statistics of external merchandise trade for that month.

HKMA launches Regtech Adoption Practice Guide series
June 17, 2021 - The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) launched today a new Regtech Adoption Practice Guide series to provide banks with detailed practical guidance on the implementation of Regtech solutions.

Unemployment rate fell to 6%
June 17, 2021 - According to the latest labor force statistics (i.e. provisional figures for March - May 2021) released today by the Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 6.4% in February - April 2021 to 6.0% in March - May 2021. The underemployment rate also decreased from 3.3% in February - April 2021 to 2.8% in March - May 2021.

Secretary for Justice attends APEC virtual Structural Reform Ministerial Meeting
June 16, 2021 - Hong Kong’s Secretary for Justice, Ms Teresa Cheng, SC, attended the virtual Structural Reform Ministerial Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2021 today to discuss the region’s structural policy response to COVID-19 under the overarching theme of structural reform and recovery from economic shocks.

StartmeupHK Salons by InvestHK bring innovation and GBA to forefront of this year’s discussions
June 15, 2021 - Invest Hong Kong (InvestHK) announced today that the highly successful 2021 edition of StartmeupHK Salons came to a close on June 10, having attracted around 740 people to join the conversations. June 11, 2021 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced today that the boarding requirements for persons arriving from certain places will be tightened from June 18.

June 10, 2021 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government today (June 10) firmly opposes the unfounded accusations made by the European Union (EU) to the Decision on Improving the Electoral System of the HKSAR (the Decision) passed by the National People's Congress (NPC) on March 11, 2021. 

Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Pearl River Delta Regional Air Quality Monitoring Network results for 2020 released
June 10, 2021 - Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao released today a report on air quality in 2020 under the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Pearl River Delta Regional Air Quality Monitoring Network, showing a continuous improvement of air quality in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) in recent years.

Target date of inaugural flights under HK-Singapore Air Travel Bubble to be reviewed in early July
June 10, 2021 - The Governments of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and Singapore will review in early July the target date of inaugural flights under the Hong Kong-Singapore Air Travel Bubble (ATB), taking into account the latest development of the COVID-19 epidemic situation in Singapore, which has been stabilizing since early June. An announcement on the way forward would be made in early July.

BioNTech Vaccine available for persons aged 12 to 15
June 10, 2021 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced today the expansion of the COVID-19 Vaccination Programme by lowering the minimum age for receiving the BioNTech vaccine from 16 to 12.

Government to extend social distancing measures under Prevention and Control of Disease Ordinance
June 9, 2021 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government will gazette directions and specifications under the Prevention and Control of Disease (Requirements and Directions) (Business and Premises) Regulation (Cap. 599F), the Prevention and Control of Disease (Prohibition on Group Gathering) Regulation (Cap. 599G) and the Prevention and Control of Disease (Wearing of Mask) Regulation (Cap. 599I) to maintain the social distancing measures currently in place. The above directions and specifications take effect at 0.00am on June 10 for a period of 14 days till June 23 (the specified period).

June 9, 2021 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government welcomes the release of a report today (June 9) by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) which reaffirms Hong Kong's position as an international financial center with a resilient financial system, sound macroeconomic and prudential policies, and robust regulatory and supervisory frameworks.

Scientific Committees under CHP update interim recommendations related to COVID-19 vaccination and quarantine requirements for vaccinated inbound travellers and vaccinated close contacts
June 9, 2021 - The Scientific Committee on Vaccine Preventable Diseases and the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Zoonotic Diseases under the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (JSC) convened a meeting today (June 9), joined by the Chief Executive's expert advisory panel (EAP), to discuss interim recommendations related to the interchangeability of COVID-19 vaccines, eligible age groups for receiving the Comirnaty COVID-19 vaccine, the use of COVID-19 vaccines for elderly, and quarantine requirement for vaccinated inbound travelers and vaccinated close contacts.

June 8, 2021 - The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) today (June 8) unveiled “Fintech 2025”, its new strategy for driving fintech development of Hong Kong.

Foreign currency reserves at US$494.5 billion
June 7, 2021 - The Hong Kong Monetary Authority announced today that the official foreign currency reserve assets of Hong Kong amounted to US$494.5 billion as at the end of May 2021, compared with US$490.6 billion at end-April 2021.

Chief Executive promotes Hong Kong as arts and cultural hub
June 7, 2021 - Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, tonight (June 7) met with representatives of Mainland and overseas art galleries via a webinar. She briefed them on Hong Kong’s growing competitive edge as an international arts and cultural hub, and that it is the best time for them to expand their presence in the city. The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Caspar Tsui, and the Under Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Dr Bernard Chan, also joined the webinar.

Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement between Hong Kong and Mexico to enter into force on June 16
June 6, 2021 - The Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (IPPA) between Hong Kong and Mexico will enter into force on June 16. The IPPA with Mexico will enhance the confidence of investors, expand investment flows between Hong Kong and Mexico, and further strengthen bilateral economic and trade ties.

Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development attends APEC virtual Ministers Responsible for Trade Meeting
June 5, 2021 - Hong Kong’s Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Edward Yau, attended the virtual Ministers Responsible for Trade (MRT) Meeting of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2021 tonight and spoke on areas of work to which APEC could contribute in conquering the twin battle against the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic crisis brought about by the pandemic.

Hong Kong grants first-ever standard patent by original grant
June 5, 2021 - The Patents Registry of the Intellectual Property Department (IPD) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has granted the first standard patent under the original grant patent (OGP) system this week, within 14 months after the date of filing of the application by the applicant.

Chief Executive addresses business sector on opportunities brought about by 14th Five-Year Plan
June 3, 2021 - ​The Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, today (June 3) addressed more than 200 members of the local and international business community at a webinar hosted by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce (HKGCC) under its 160th anniversary distinguished speakers series. She highlighted the tremendous opportunities presented by the “Outline of the 14th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development of the People’s Republic of China and the Long-Range Objectives Through the Year 2035” (the 14th Five-Year Plan) approved by the National People’s Congress earlier this year, and encouraged businesses to contribute to and benefit from the national blueprint and action agenda.

June 3, 2021 - ​Hong Kong’s Secretary for Food and Health (SFH) today (June 3) approved the lowering of the age limit for receiving the Comirnaty vaccine to age 12.

Government announces additional fourth cycle designated quarantine hotels
June 3, 2021 - ​The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced today two additional designated quarantine hotels for the fourth cycle of the Designated Quarantine Hotel Scheme. Along with the 31 hotels announced on May 20, there will be a total of 33 hotels in the fourth cycle, providing about 9,000 rooms, with the contract period running from June 20 to August 31.

Government to enact new regulation to implement Real-name Registration Program for SIM Cards
June 1, 2021 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced today that the Chief Executive in Council has approved the enactment of the Telecommunications (Registration of SIM Cards) Regulation (the Regulation) to implement the Real-name Registration Program for Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) Cards (Registration Program). The Regulation seeks to facilitate the prevention and detection of crimes related to the use of pre-paid SIM (PPS) cards, thereby safeguarding the integrity of telecommunications services and the security of communications network.

Provisional statistics of retail sales for April 2021
June 1, 2021 - The Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government released the latest figures on retail sales today.
