Exchange Fund Abridged Balance Sheet and Currency Board Account
May 31, 2021 - The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) announced today that the total assets of the Exchange Fund amounted to HK$4,538.4 billion (US$581.8 billion) as at April 30, 2021, HK$2.7 billion (US$346 million) higher than that at the end of March 2021. Hong Kong dollar assets increased by HK$3 billion (US$384 million) while foreign currency assets decreased by HK$0.3 billion (US$38 million).

Financial results for the month ended April 30, 2021
May 31, 2021 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced today its financial results for April 2021, the first month of the current financial year.

Government adjusts boarding and quarantine requirements for persons arriving from certain places
May 31, 2021 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced today that the boarding and quarantine requirements for persons arriving from certain places will be adjusted from June 4.

“Early Vaccination for All” campaign launched
May 31, 2021 - Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, announced the launch of the “Early Vaccination for All” campaign by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government today. The campaign aims to help build an immune barrier in Hong Kong as soon as possible by significantly raising the vaccination rate during the three-month-long critical period from now until the end of August, thereby restoring normality to society sooner rather than later and allowing more than a million students to go back to school safely in the new school year. She also pointed out that vaccination is expected to be an indispensable requirement for trips to the Mainland and overseas places for travel and work in the future.

Chief Executive signs Improving Electoral System (Consolidated Amendments) Ordinance 2021
May 29, 2021 - “Signing bills passed by the LegCo and promulgating laws is one of the Chief Executive’s constitutional powers and functions. I have exercised this power and discharged this function in respect of four legal instruments within a year, which are essential to upholding the principle of ‘One Country, Two Systems’ in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and ensuring its full and faithful implementation. It is indeed a significant responsibility,” Mrs Lam said.

Hong Kong SAR Government files first written submission to WTO panel in respect of US’ requirement on origin marking
May 28, 2021 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government today filed its first written submission to the panel established under the World Trade Organization (WTO) Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) to consider the dispute raised by Hong Kong with respect to the violation of WTO rules by the requirement of the United States (US) on origin marking for Hong Kong products.

Chief Executive welcomes passage of Improving Electoral System (Consolidated Amendments) Bill 2021
May 27, 2021 - Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, welcomed the passage of the Improving Electoral System (Consolidated Amendments) Bill 2021 by the Legislative Council (LegCo) today, hailing it as a landmark occasion for ensuring “patriots administering Hong Kong” in accordance with the principle of “One Country, Two Systems”. 

External merchandise trade statistics for April 2021
May 27, 2021 - The Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government released today the external merchandise trade statistics for April 2021. In April 2021, the values of Hong Kong's total exports and imports of goods both recorded year-on-year increases, at 24.4% and 25.2% respectively.

Government extends social distancing measures under Prevention and Control of Disease Ordinance
May 26, 2021 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government gazetted directions and specifications under the Prevention and Control of Disease (Requirements and Directions) (Business and Premises) Regulation (Cap. 599F), the Prevention and Control of Disease (Prohibition on Group Gathering) Regulation (Cap. 599G) and the Prevention and Control of Disease (Wearing of Mask) Regulation (Cap. 599I) to maintain the social distancing measures currently in place. The above directions and specifications take effect at 0.00am on May 27 for a period of 14 days till June 9 (the specified period).

Government to introduce resolutions to raise borrowing limits under Government Bond Program and Government Green Bond
Program

May 26, 2021 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government served notices to the Legislative Council (LegCo) today announcing its intention to introduce two resolutions under the Loans Ordinance to raise the borrowing limits of the Government Bond Programme (GBP) and the Government Green Bond Programme (GGBP), with a view to promoting the sustainable development of the local bond market. 

“Cruise-to-nowhere” itineraries can resume under set of health control protocols from end-July
May 26, 2021 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced today (May 26) that cruise lines are expected to resume, for Hong Kong residents, “cruise-to-nowhere” (CTN) itineraries, which do not involve ports outside Hong Kong, at end-July 2021 the earliest on the condition that they strictly comply with a set of health precautionary measures specifically designed for cruise travel.

Hong Kong team achieves excellent results at Asian Physics Olympiad
May 24, 2021 - A team of eight students representing Hong Kong achieved excellent results in the 21st Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO 2021), winning two gold medals, two silver medals, two bronze medals and two honorable mentions, which is the best result in recent years.

Secretary for Food and Health attends 74th World Health Assembly via video conferencing
May 24, 2021 - The Secretary for Food and Health, Professor Sophia Chan, attended the 74th World Health Assembly (WHA74) of the World Health Organization (WHO) via video conferencing today as a member of the Chinese delegation.

WHO confirms Hong Kong’s interruption of endemic rubella virus transmission
May 21, 2021 - The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Verification Commission for Measles and Rubella Elimination in the Western Pacific (RVC) today confirmed that Hong Kong has achieved the interruption of endemic rubella virus transmission.

Consumer Price Indices for April 2021
May 21, 2021 - The Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government  released today the Consumer Price Index (CPI) figures for April 2021. According to the Composite CPI, overall consumer prices rose by 0.7% in April 2021 over the same month a year earlier, larger than the corresponding increase (0.5%) in March 2021.

Unemployment rate fell to 6.4%
May 20, 2021 - According to the latest labor force statistics (i.e. provisional figures for February - April 2021) released today (May 20) by the Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 6.8% in January - March 2021 to 6.4% in February - April 2021. The underemployment rate also decreased from 3.8% in January - March 2021 to 3.3% in February - April 2021.

Government announces list of fourth-cycle designated quarantine hotels
May 20, 2021 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced today the list of designated quarantine hotels for the fourth cycle. A total of 31 hotels will provide about 8 500 rooms in the new cycle, with the contract period running from June 20 to August 31. The Government can adjust the number of rooms available in this cycle as and where necessary.

Chief Executive visits Art Basel Hong Kong
May 20, 2021 - Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, today visited the ninth edition of Art Basel Hong Kong, which is being held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) in Wan Chai for five days starting May 19. Mrs Lam welcomed the return of the physical version of the event back to Hong Kong after it was cancelled last year.

May 20, 2021 - Hong Kong’s Secretary for Justice, Ms Teresa Cheng, SC, signed a memorandum of understanding with the Chairman of the Asian Academy of International Law (AAIL), Dr Anthony Neoh, SC, on the administration of the Hong Kong Legal Cloud Fund today.

Medical Registration (Amendment) Bill 2021 to be introduced into LegCo
May 18, 2021 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government will introduce the Medical Registration (Amendment) Bill 2021 into the Legislative Council (LegCo) to create a new pathway for admission of qualified non-locally trained doctors who are Hong Kong permanent residents to practice in Hong Kong.

Appointment of permanent judge of the Court of Final Appeal
May 12, 2021 - The Chief Justice of the Court of Final Appeal, Mr Andrew Cheung Kui-nung, today welcomed the acceptance by the Chief Executive of the recommendation of the Judicial Officers Recommendation Commission (JORC) on the appointment of the Honourable Mr Justice Johnson Lam Man-hon, Vice-President and Justice of Appeal of the Court of Appeal of the High Court, as a permanent judge of the Court of Final Appeal. May 7, 2021 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government today announced the updated quarantine requirements for vaccinated close contacts of locally acquired COVID-19 cases. Taking into account the consensus interim recommendation by the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Zoonotic Diseases and the Scientific Committee on Vaccine Preventable Diseases (collectively the JSC) under the CHP, joined by the Chief Executive's expert advisory panel (EAP), published today, as well as the latest local situations of the epidemic, the Government decided to adopt a progressive manner to adjust the relevant quarantine requirements for close contacts as follows starting from today.

Foreign currency reserves at US$490.6 billion
May 7, 2021 - The Hong Kong Monetary Authority announced today that the official foreign currency reserve assets of Hong Kong amounted to US$490.6 billion as at the end of April 2021, compared with US$491.4 billion at end-March 2021.

Hong Kong ranked third most preferred seat for arbitration globally
May 7, 2021 - The Department of Justice of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has welcomed the 2021 International Arbitration Survey released by Queen Mary University of London today in which Hong Kong is ranked the third most preferred seat for arbitration worldwide.

Government announces latest boarding and quarantine arrangements for persons arriving at Hong Kong under “vaccine bubble” concept
May 7, 2021 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced today that it will adjust the boarding, quarantine and testing arrangements for persons arriving at Hong Kong (including Hong Kong residents returning to Hong Kong) who have completed their COVID-19 vaccination course under the “vaccine bubble” concept. Subject to no significant change to the epidemic situation locally and in relevant overseas places, the relevant measures will be implemented on May 12 at 0.00am.

May 4, 2021 - The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced today the continued suspension of passenger flights from India, Nepal, Pakistan, and the Philippines, and the continued restriction on persons who have stayed in India, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Brazil, and South Africa from boarding flights for Hong Kong from any place; and subject to no significant change to epidemic situation locally and in relevant overseas places, the lifting of the ban for persons who have stayed in Ireland and the United Kingdom (UK) on boarding for Hong Kong on May 7, to allow flights to resume from those places and for Hong Kong residents there to board for flights for Hong Kong, while these relevant persons would subject to the most stringent compulsory quarantine and testing arrangements upon arrival at Hong Kong.
